great sessions by one of the most unique talents in jazz – 50s French Horn player John Graas, an amazing soloist, songwriter, and arranger! The first 9 tracks on the set are from the album Jazzmantics – a 1957 Decca session that features Graas working with a nonet that features a shifting cast of members that includes Art Pepper, Conte Candoli, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, Jack Montrose, and Jack Sheldon. The album is one of the best examples of the 2nd wave of LA cool jazz from the time – and also one of the most obscure Decca sessions of the 50s. Titles include "Flip Tip", "ID", "Petite Poem", "Jazz Overture", "Jazz Chorale", "Free & Easy", and "Will Success Spoil Rock n Roll?" Next up is the Mercury session Coup De Graas – an equally great batch of west coast chamber jazz, and one that's far better than you'd guess from it's punning name. Art Pepper and Conte Candoli are again key parts of the group – making for a wonderfully sharp horn sound – and titles include "Van Nuys Indeed", "Land Of Broken Toys", "Swing Nicely", "Blues Street", and "Rogersesque". Phono release adds some great bonus material from two Shorty Rogers sessions plus Graas's "Jazz Chaconne No. 1".
